We enter our 11th year on the farm with gratitude, as we combine the growing and processing of food with the continued interconnection of music and art.
We just finished our winter/spring workshops for 2019 which were full of rich cultural diversity, powerful music and joy.
We turn now to the planting of our summer green garden, harvesting and processing tea, cacao and turmeric and looking for new friends and customers for our farm products. We appreciate your support and also your suggestions.
Pineapples arrive in summer as well as avocados and lilikoi (passion fruit). Bananas, papayas and ulu (breadfruit) just keep coming. Please check our Store page for farm products and mahalo for supporting small organic farms everywhere.
We finally found the tractor of our dreams, Kubota BX series. After eleven years we are moving on up! Front loader and brush hog included so we can move mulch, compost and chips as well as mowing our wild pastures.
Our WWOOF (World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farms) staff continues to support the life of the farm. During workshops weeks, we had Cara Trezise, Emma Tius and Anes cheffing. Also Dillon is in his fourth year here as resident farmer, making himself indispensable and part of the ohana. Floyd is our friend and househusband, builder/inventor extraordinaire. We are lucky farmers/artists/island people.
We loved the Kama Aina Festival in February. Local folks showed up for a day of classes with 4 maestra drummers from around the world who were at the farm teaching a week long workshop called Born to Drum. At the end of the day we had an informal performance at Ha Lau Leo Nani with teachers and students all participating. Lots of new faces. Lots of children.
Every month Charles Haines and I host a Circle Singing class for 2 hours in Ha Lau Leo Nani. This form that originates from Bobby McFerrin allows anyone to come and participate. It is group improvisational singing in a circle that has form so that the music can emerge and everyone feels safe, supported and challenged. Dates for the next months are:
March 24 4 to 6 PM
April 14 4 to 6 PM
May 19 4 to 6 PM
Happy to welcome you and your friends. $15 to $25 donation.
Please sign onto our mailing list so we can be sure you know of coming events.
If you are interested in renting Ha Lau Leo Nani for workshops, concerts or special presentations, please contact us. We want the studio to be a community resource.
Growing food and building community seems to be radical work these days.
We are grateful for the privilege of living on Leo Nani Farms.
